This biography of Dr. Kate Pelham Newcomb was one of the first doctors practicing in far northwestern Wisconsin, and one of the first female doctors in the state. In 1956, another biographer, Adele Comandini, wrote a book about her by the same title, but that book was written for adult readers and has gone out of print.

Dr. Newcomb founded and was the first Medical Director of Lakeland Memorial Hospital. The effort to launch this hospital inspired not only the community of Woodruff, Wisconsin, where it was located, but the entire country. The students of Arbor Vitae-Woodruff High School launched a “Million Penny Parade” to raise money for the hospital, and the story eventually brought Dr. Newcomb to the television program “This is Your Life.” That appearance led to over $100,000 in donations from viewers around the United States.

Here’s what Wojahn says about her book on “Dr. Kate.”
